What is the Life in the UK Test?
The Life in the UK Test, also known as the British citizenship test, is a key requirement for anyone applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship. The test assesses your knowledge of British history, culture, values, traditions, and laws, based on the official handbook: Life in the UK: A Guide for New Residents (3rd Edition).
The test consists of 24 multiple-choice questions and lasts for 45 minutes. To pass, you must answer at least 18 questions correctly (75%). All questions are drawn from the official handbook, which covers six chapters on British history, government, daily life, and more.
What do you need to book the Life in the UK Test?
To book your test, you must register online via the official Life in the UK Test booking website. You must do this at least 7 days before your preferred test date. To complete your booking, you’ll need:

A valid form of ID (e.g. passport, biometric residence permit/card)

A debit or credit card to pay the fee

An email address to create your account
You’ll be able to choose your preferred test location during the booking process. Make sure all the information you provide matches your official documents exactly.
Where can you take the test?
There are over 60 test centres across the UK. When booking, you’ll be shown a list of available centres closest to your postcode. You must choose one of the five nearest test centres to your address.
How much does the Life in the UK Test cost?
The test costs £50. This fee must be paid at the time of booking. If you fail the test and need to retake it, you’ll have to pay the full fee again.

What is the Life in the UK Test pass rate?
According to the UK Home Office, between Q2 2010 and Q3 2014, a total of 748,613 Life in the UK Tests were taken. Of these, 185,863 were failed, giving a pass rate of approximately 75.17%.
